Demonstration - Floral Intimacy

Here is a little demo put together showing how I went about painting this "Madonna" lily. It's based off of a photograph taken and shared with me by Peter Saw.

Techniques used throughout are wet in wet and glazing.  Colors used are Winsor Blue, Sap Green and Winsor Yellow in the background and French Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue and Aliz Crimson mixed with French Ultramarine for the purples/lavenders on the petals.  For the stamens, Aureolin was used as a base color with Burnt Sienna and Burnt Sienna mixed with a little French Ultramarine for the darker areas.

Step# 1 - Start the background using negative painting. Colors used: Winsor Blue + Sap Green and Winsor Yellow.

Step# 2 - Mask out stamens and the stigma.  Next start painting the shading on each petal.  Darken the background so it doesn't have too high of a tone value....making it recede.  Add a hint of a green bud to the right.

Step# 3 - Continue deepening the shading, forming the ridges on the petals, coloring the center, and lifting some of the blue back off to create the illusion of light reflecting. Step# 4 - Remove the masking, paint the stamens and begin to lay in the stamen cast shadows.
Step# 5 - Continue working shadows and lights to include carefully going back over the center around the stamens if not dark enough. Step# 6 - Final details include darkening the cast shadows of the stamens on lower petals until shadow value is about 5 times darker than the sunlit portion of the lily.
